 Facility Overview

Clean Earth of Carteret, Inc. is the first “fixed based” bioremediation facility permitted in the State of New Jersey and the largest (of its design) operating in the U.S.  The facility has 80,000 sq. ft. of treatment area, with an additional outside storage capacity of 45,000 sq. ft.  The facility utilizes an onsite laboratory to ensure compliance and quality control for incoming waste streams.  All treatment of soils is conducted under a “negative air” (NJDEP-Designed) air handling system that exchanges clean air through the facility and processes airborne organics via baghouse followed in series by two activated carbon absorption units.

CEC is permitted and capable of processing 400,000 tons of petroleum contaminated soil per year.  The average time frame needed to reduce contaminants to NJDEP-RDCSCC standards is approximately 7 to 14 days (assuming starting concentration of 5,000 ppm TPH and other limiting factors).

 Treatment Technology Platform

CEC utilizes a proven biological system that removes total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) from soil.  The system is comprised of elements unique to our process: a proprietary nutrient, an engineered blend of bacteria chosen for their ability to quickly and effectively metabolize organic contaminates, and aggressive soil mixing.

Microorganisms:
The system utilizes strains of naturally occurring bacteria blended within a matrix of organic and inorganic macro and micro nutrients which are essential for cell growth and maintenance ensuring aggressive consumption of alkenes up to C45 and PAHs.  The concentrated bacterial inoculum is applied at the necessary dosage to mechanically sized contaminated soils to facilitate the contact with the target contaminates.  In the presence of TPH, these bacteria reach and sustain population densities necessary to immediately begin the degradation process without encountering the lag time typically encountered with other processes.  Once the food source (petroleum hydrocarbon) has been extinguished, the population density diminishes to normal background levels.
