Overview
Clean Earth of West Virginia (CEWV) is located in Friendly, WV, thirty miles north of Parkersburg on Route 2 and sixty miles southwest of Pittsburgh.Situated on twenty acres within an industrial park, the layout consists of a thirty thousand square foot storage and processing building, a medium temperature thermal processing unit and office space.
CEWV is permitted to accept petroleum-contaminated soils, coal tars and Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) materials along with other non-hazardous materials. The facility features rail access on the property, with the ability to load and unload rail cars. Conveniently located less than one mile from the Ohio river, the facility also offers barge access.

The processing facility is permitted to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week operating a rotary kiln dryer to remove contaminants from the soil, a thermal oxidizer for hydrocarbon destruction, and a bag house to remove dust from the flue gas. The facility can reach treatment temperatures of up to 1400 degrees Fahrenheit and can handle a wide variety of volatile and semi-volatile contaminants ranging from gasoline to coal tar residuals.
CEWV is permitted for bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated soils within the enclosed soils storage building. Microbial activity is used to degrade organic materials. This natural process allows micro-organisms to be used for degradation of petroleum in soils further enhanced or accelerated by the aeration of oxygen through mechanical handling.
Once the processes have reduced the contaminant concentration to below cleanup action levels as established in CEWV’s permit, testing for petroleum concentration and/or the concentration of selected target contaminants of the post-treated soils is conducted for both processes.
