Retailers Want A Safe Fourth of July

SHARE

JULY 2, 2014

With the weather heating up outside, it’s important that retailers find a way to keep things cool when it comes to hazardous waste management this summer. Managing retail waste is no easy feat, especially in months where there’s an abundance of hazardous materials available in retail stores. During the summer months especially, retailers have to take caution when stocking up on seasonal items. Summer essentials such as insect spray, sunscreen, candles, batteries and swimming pool chemicals may pose major compliance risks for retailers. Popular Fourth of July products such as propane tanks, lighter fluid, aerosol cans, and sparklers are all considered hazardous by EPA standards. These products may be key to summertime celebrations, but it’s crucial that retailers understand proper handling and disposal to maintain compliance.

Handling Hazardous Materials: Education is Key

It’s important that retailers educate permanent and summer-time associates on the proper handling of hazardous materials. Employees should be trained on the complexities of hazardous materials, especially when new seasonal materials are put on the shelves. Teaching them how to successfully identify, handle and segregate hazardous materials for proper disposal is critical. A simple mistake such as placing swimming pools chemicals in the trash or pouring pesticides down the drain can cause major compliance issues and associated fines for the retailer. Being aware of federal and state oversight can help retailers maintain compliance in hazardous waste management and avoid regulatory fines. As employee shifts change frequently during the summer months, it is important that all retail personnel are educated on the proper handling of hazardous items. Although seasonal changes in product availability continues to be a constant battle for retailers, by partnering with a hazardous waste management expert that is attuned to such challenges, retailers can become better prepared and approach the summer months with ease.
